PROJECT

Swisscolocation is a business incubation project, created by a business idea of Tinext SA, planned and implemented by the Business Up team.

From need
to business opportunity

Tinext SA, leader of digital technologies in Ticino, once reached the physical space limit within its Data Center, had to consider whether it was worthwhile to build a new one or to rely on third parties. Furthermore, there was a need of a high-performance Data Center not only for themself but also for other companies in the area. Without losing control of its core activities, Tinext wanted to understand whether there was a business opportunity where to invest as a provider of Data Center space in the Ticino area.

Business Up approach

Business Up initally assisted Tinext in evaluating how strategic would have been building and maintaining its own Data Center. Once the existence of a potential market for this kind of services was proved, Tinext decided to spin off this activity, remaining however the main shareholder of the NewCo. Business Up was enrolled to manage this spin off in order to reach the operational break-even within a couple of years.

Project Development

In addition to leading the preliminary feasibility study and business planning phases, Business Up was in charge of evaluating the Data Center’s new construction solutions. After the co-foundation of Swisscolocation SA, in 2003, Business Up coordinated a capital raising with the entry of strategic investors from Zurich and Northern Italy.

At a corporate level, Business Up defined the strategic positioning of Swisscolocation, the organization and management of all company’s operational and commercial activities, pursuing all the operational and strategic activities at a fixed cost. Swisscolocation SA shareholders monitor Business Up work through the Board of Directors.

Results

Swisscolocation SA is today a centre of excellence on the Ticino market. The Data Center is active since August 2014. In addition to hosting the IT infrastructure of Tinext SA within a high-performance facility previously not available in the Ticino area, it offers 400 m2 of colocation data rooms to companies which consider the IT services’ continuity vital for their own business.

After the second generation handover, the ownership of Spinelli SA felt the need to strengthen the management of the company, especially regarding the medium and long-term planning, to guarantee continuity and profitability in a rapidly evolving market.

Business Up, together with the Spinelli SA board, has defined a structured development project: at first, a 360° analysis to assess the company growth potential, then the definition of a strategy based on a 5 years development plan and, finally, a concrete support for the management as regards the implementation.

Project Development

Starting from a well-estabilished entity in the Ticino area, as Spinelli SA is, the growth potential has been identified in:

  1. Increasing the firm’s efficiency, by the development of ad-hoc new vertical departments and by the implementation of lean methodologies in each department;
  2. Focusing the marketing and sales activities on specific customer segments;
  3. Helping the company in the building automation business’ entrance.

Together with the development plan, the governance has been strengthened as regards both the strategic and the operational level, in order to guarantee a good balance between top-level processes and bottom ones.

Results

The collaboration with Business Up has led to:

  • A structured strategic plan, that is the fundamental tool used to lead the company;
  • Six vertical departments with their own goals and their well-defined roles and responsibilities;
  • A new department for building automation, actually with six employees but affected by a growing trend.

These changes have led the company to reach a record turnover in the last two years, even improving the profitability.

Project Development

Business Up carried out a 360-degree analysis of the company which led to the identification of urgent actions to be rapidly implemented to soon increase the company’s profitability. The improvement project included the following activities:

  • Introduction of a new management and control system;
  • Sales alignment to corporate goals;
  • Reinforcement of the technical and project management competences;
  • Introduction of a data-driven culture (focus on performances at all organizational levels).

Business Up has made the changes possible by working closely with the company’s management. Moreover a new way to lead the company has been introduced, based on the annual definition of budget and targets and a never-ending monitoring of the performances, that are discussed during the year by the board of directors.
Today the consolidation phase is completed and Bazzana and Business Up are working on future developments.

  • a Management workforce focused on strategic objectives; • a solid team;
  • an effective Management control system;
  • a 5X increasing of the construction sites’ profitability.
